[Retros] Ultimate question

Isn't there quite a long literature on this (for example, I recall that  
several non-chess setient mathematicians gave incorrect assertions), and  wasn't 
this correctly discussed in Euwe's Meganbetrachtungen Ueber das  Schachspiel, 
published in a scholarly journal around 1929 or  so?
