I'll defer to Jonathan's superior knowledge but add a tiny data
point. I installed 4x6s in the front of my 86. They made two
versions, a US vs a Euro version. Whatever large stereo shop I went
to several years ago had a computer that said the Euros would fit..
but only the US version were available, so I bought them. I later
discovered the difference was the mounting system.

The US version is a 4 x 6 oval speaker mounted in a 5 x 7
(approximately) rectangular mounting frame with lotsa holes for
various installation options. The Euro version is a 4 x 6 oval with
4 little screw holes about where the corners would be on a rectangle.
The US mounting plate would not fit into the SEC dashboard space, but
I was able to cut away enough of it with tin snips to get the
speakers mounted.

Only your ears will tell you -- by actual comparison -- whether 4 x
6s are preferable to 4" rounds.
