No filter under the dash in a W126. FYI, I left the AC electric (auxiliary) fan in place and functional on my SEL in order to assist the dual-electric fans. Did you keep yours running??
In slow city traffic my R134 560SEL with the dual-electric fans still won't freeze you. I need to be going 20-30mph before that happens, but... with the fans running, I can stop in Vegas 100+F heat and the AC still keeps me cool. Without the fans, the AC just didn't keep up and you could feel the outlet temps rising at a stop light.
IIRC, the R134 system, when properly charged, still has some bubbles in the sightglass. A full liquid stream is a slight overcharge, which will decrease the cooling capability of the system.

Installed the Flex-A-Lite dual fan's on Sunday WOW what a diff. it makes here in HOT Arizona
Now my AC works a lot better but still not REALLY cold ... Vacuumed out the 134 and recharged the system
Is there a filter of some sort like the BMW's have under the dashboard I need to change????
Ciao, Frank
