22m pixel record for Sinar's new chip

Swiss manufacturer Sinar will unveil a breakthrough new CCD sensor at
Photokina later this month. Taking capture resolution to new levels, the
chip, developed in co-operation with Kodak, features a record 22m
pixels.

Significantly, the sensor is rectangular in shape and has an aspect
ratio similar to that of 645 medium format cameras, allowing the full
frame to be used for common picture formats. Users of digital cameras
and backs accepting the current largest chip (16m pixels), which are
square in shape, are forced to crop, using only two thirds the pixels
available.
