You can photograph anything you want from public property. You can print
the photographs and sell them as art or for editorial use. You cannot sell
them into advertising for some product without getting a property release.
To make the release "official", if the release says something like "for
compensation received" actually means that you must give compensation of
worth, mutually decided upon of course.

For the purposes that you describe, just take pictures, print them, sell
them. You are clean.
