Brock,

I normally take along an old Velbon alloy tripod that fits nicely 
into a tripod case with a shoulder strap. Somehow it seems to become 
invisible to the booking in people when it is slung over my shoulder 
and goes through the hand luggage scanners with no problems.

This is a fairly compact tripod and is fine for a small 4x5 camera 
but too small for anything larger.
